Western Health Advantage (WHA) offers employers and their teams high-quality medical care at an affordable price. Learn more about our carrier partner’s refreshingly clear, human approach to healthcare and its partnership with Canopy Health below!
A Local Carrier Offering Coverage Throughout the Bay Area
Based out of Sacramento, Western Health Advantage prides itself on being a local company that values long-term relationships with employers and individual members. Besides delivering exceptional access to healthcare, WHA is a committed community partner, improving Northern California through charitable outreach and volunteer activities. For over two decades, they have strived to treat all their members and providers with honesty and integrity.
Both small and large group employers can offer WHA plans to their employees who live and work in 13 counties, including Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, and Sonoma Counties. Members in these seven counties are also eligible for Canopy Health membership.
Because WHA providers are conveniently located throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond, members can access high-quality care where they live, work, and play. While members typically are restricted to seeking treatment in-network, in an emergency, they can seek treatment at any hospital’s emergency department. They also have access to WHA’s Nurse24 hotline, which provides 24/7 access to medical advice.
WHA Members Have Access to an Extensive Medical Network
When employees enroll in Western Health Advantage, they can become part of Canopy Health by selecting a primary care physician (PCP) at Hill Physicians Medical Group, John Muir Physician Network, Meritage Medical Network, and Santa Clara County IPA. From there, their PCPs can refer them to any of the 5,000 physicians, 18 hospitals, and numerous care centers that compose the Canopy Health alliance.
In addition to the Canopy Health alliance, WHA members can also seek treatment with any of the other providers within the broader Western Health Advantage network. This includes access to behavioral health services without a referral, via Magellan Health Services. For more information about WHA’s network, you can review its provider directory.
Coordinated Care Helps Reduce Healthcare Costs
Western Health Advantage manages to reduce healthcare costs by offering a narrower network of high-quality providers and delivering coordinated healthcare. Studies show smaller networks typically offer less-expensive premiums than the (sometimes overwhelming) array of options of an extra-large PPO plan.
All WHA plans are HMOs, so one skilled primary care physician oversees all aspects of a member’s care, which offers multiple benefits. First, when patients receive coordinated care, they are less likely to experience preventable complications from chronic conditions, such as diabetes or coronary artery disease. And routine examinations are more likely to identify serious medical issues, such as cancer or heart disease, before they become unmanageable. Finally, coordinated care cuts down on a member’s number of unnecessary or duplicative medical procedures, reducing overall healthcare costs.
While some narrow healthcare networks are overly restrictive, WHA and Canopy Health offer a unique combination of high-quality physicians and hospitals at a reasonable price. Our alliance offers a curated selection of some of the Bay Area’s best physicians and hospitals, giving our members the ability to receive treatment from world-renowned specialists and receive cutting-edge medical care.
Additionally, WHA members receive valuable extras, including gym discounts, access to free classes and support groups, foreign language and ASL interpreters, and assistance should a medical emergency arise while abroad.
