Good Health Begins at Work
As a nation, our collective health has experienced alternating peaks and valleys over the past few decades. On one hand, emerging research has helped reduce cancer deaths, and the number of Americans using tobacco has also declined sharply, lessening the prevalence of related issues like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
On the other hand, the average lifespan decreased in 2015 for the first time since 1993. Additionally, mortality resulting from heart disease, strokes, drug overdoses, and diabetes increased the death rate by 1.2% in 2015, according to the National Center for Health Statistics.
Experts suggest that the root cause of many of our current health problems can be traced back to a significant rise in obesity as well as a steady decline in our exercise levels and overall physical fitness. In other words, we’re gaining weight, and we’re just not doing much about our diet or lifestyle to lose it.
What’s worse is that poor physical health can lead to poor emotional health (and vice versa), which can then negatively impact your employees’ production at work and quality of life. The San Francisco Marathon
One way in which you can encourage your employees to be more active is to get them excited about registering for this year’s Biofreeze San Francisco Marathon. This year’s race, which will be held on July 28, 2019, marks the 42nd anniversary of the event. In addition to the marathon, there are also several other race types. For those super-hardcore runners, there’s the Ultramarathon ― a fundraising event in which racers run the full marathon back-to-back for a total distance of 52.4 miles to benefit their favorite charity.
And for others not up for that incredible challenge, there’s the full marathon, which takes you on an unforgettable journey beginning at the waterfront, over the Golden Gate Bridge, past iconic landmarks and throughout historic neighborhoods. There are also shorter races, including two half-marathons (13.1 miles each) and a 5k.
All races take place throughout historic and quintessential San Francisco neighborhoods and communities, including The Mission District, Dogpatch, and Haight-Ashbury, and along waterfront areas such as the Embarcadero, Fisherman’s Wharf, and Crissy Field. Additionally, runners will take in some views of San Francisco’s greatest landmarks, including Coit Tower and Golden Gate Park.
This year, you have two 5k races to choose from, as they will be holding a 5k on both Saturday and Sunday of Race Weekend. On Sunday, whether you’re racing for speed or pushing your little one as part of the stroller division, the fast, flat 5K course has something for everyone.
In addition to the satisfaction that comes with completing any race, this year’s event also features challenges for unique feats of fitness. The winners of these challenges will receive special medals and other prizes.
- Biofreeze San Francisco Double Up Challenge: Double up on race weekend and run both the Saturday, July 27 5k and a half, full, or ultramarathon on Sunday, July 28. Those who are part of this inaugural challenge will earn triple bling plus a long sleeve tech shirt for the longest distance the participant ran. Only 1,000 spots are available.
- Half It All Challenge: Medals will be distributed for participants who run the first half-marathon and second half-marathon in consecutive years.
- 52 Club: Participants who complete both half-marathon events consecutively and the full marathon the following year will earn the coveted “52 Club” hoodie.
- TSFM Loyal Runners: Participants who run The Biofreeze San Francisco Marathon (half or full marathon) three or more times consecutively receive exclusive rewards.
- SF/Berkeley Challenge: Run the Bay from the Golden Gate Bridge to Cal Campus and there will be an extra medal waiting for you. Runners who participate in any distance event at The Biofreeze San Francisco Marathon and any distance event at The Biofreeze Berkeley Half Marathon consecutively will receive a special San Francisco/Berkeley Challenge medal commemorating their achievement.
- SF Original Run Series: Commemorative medals will be distributed to participants who complete four iconic San Francisco running events ― Bay to Breakers, The Biofreeze San Francisco Marathon, The San Francisco Giant Race, and the Bridge to Bridge run.
For their historic 40th Anniversary event in 2017, the San Francisco Marathon had 27,500 runners participating in races. Overall, cancer survivors who get at least 30 minutes of daily exercise live 5.3 years longer on average.
