We’re proud to announce that Healthgrades listed multiple Canopy Health alliance hospitals in its lists of America’s Best Hospitals. This year, both John Muir Health – Walnut Creek and Washington Hospital made the cut. UCSF Health’s campuses in Parnassus and Mt. Zion also received Healthgrades’ Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence in 2018. Keep reading to learn more about the Best Hospitals lists and these exceptional facilities!

Healthgrades’ Best Hospitals Exceed Clinical Expectations and Deliver Exceptional Care

While Healthgrades assesses a wide variety of hospital metrics and specialties, the America’s Best Hospitals lists are its most coveted awards. According to the ranking organization, its Top 50 and Top 100 Hospital lists represent the top 1% and 2% of hospitals in the United States. Healthgrades estimates that if every U.S. hospital performed at the same level as its top 100, we would save 162,284 lives annually.

To qualify for the Top 50 and Top 100 lists, a hospital must receive Healthgrades’ Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence for multiple consecutive years. The Clinical Excellence award is given to the top 5% of hospitals nationwide, based on complication and mortality rates for 32 procedures and conditions — including heart failure, COPD, stroke, sepsis, hip replacement, and spinal fusion.

This year’s Top 100 Hospital honorees all have four common characteristics:

  • Patient-Centered Care: As healthcare shifts to a value-based system, these hospitals are looking for ways to improve patient experiences and outcomes.
  • Evidence-Based Decision Making: Data and population health management tools help the top hospitals and their patients make better healthcare decisions.
  • Collaboration: Meaningful relationships, strong clinical teams, and accountability increase the engagement of both medical providers and patients.
  • Consumer and Patient Engagement: The best hospitals are offering personalized care, informative decision-making tools for patients, and technologies that improve access to care (such as telehealth).

We’re pleased to announce that California has more Top 50 and Top 100 hospitals than any other state, including two Canopy Health alliance members, John Muir Health- Walnut Creek and Washington Hospital.

John Muir Health Walnut Creek

John Muir Health Walnut Creek is a 554-bed hospital and serves as Contra Costa County’s only trauma center. It has built a strong reputation as one of the Bay Area’s premier hospitals, offering comprehensive medical services for both emergency and chronic medical conditions.

It is frequently honored for its clinical outcomes and patient experience. In 2018, Healthgrades named John Muir Health Walnut Creek to its Top 50 Hospitals list. Similarly, U.S. News & World Report named it the #2 hospital in the Bay Area.

Washington Hospital

The Washington Hospital Healthcare System delivers comprehensive medical care to Fremont and the rest of Alameda County. Its facilities include a 341-bed acute care hospital, the Taylor McAdam Bell Neuroscience Center, and the Washington Institute for Joint Restoration and Research. Currently, construction is underway for new advanced ER, ICU, and Coronary Care units.

In 2018, Healthgrades named Washington Hospital to its Top 100 Hospitals list for the seventh consecutive year. Healthgrades has also honored its orthopedic, joint replacement, esophageal and stomach surgery, heart attack, sepsis, and general surgery programs.
