Alameda Health System is hosting its 26th Annual Community Health Fair on October 20, 2018. The event aims to educate community members about important health and wellness issues and help them identify and understand their healthcare needs. Keep reading to learn more about this exciting event!

Alameda Health System: A Vital Part of Bay Area Wellness

Alameda Health System has served the East Bay since 1864. During that time, it has grown from a single infirmary into an award-winning integrated health system. Today, Alameda Health System’s team consists of five hospitals, four wellness centers, and roughly 1,000 physicians. Its hospitals are also part of the Canopy Health alliance.

The health systems’ hospitals and physicians have a clear mission: Caring, Healing, Teaching, Serving All. It is committed to community health, training a new and diverse healthcare workforce, addressing healthcare disparities, and delivering world-class healthcare.

Alameda Hospital, where the Community Health Fair is held, is a Certified Primary Stroke Center and received the American Heart and Stroke Associations’ Get with the Guidelines-Stroke Gold Plus Quality Award, Get with the Guidelines-Heart Failure Gold Plus Quality Award, and Stroke Honor Roll, Elite Plus.

Access Valuable Information About Your Health and Wellness

Canopy Health’s alliance of hospitals, physicians, and care centers believes everyone in the Bay Area deserves access to high-quality health information. When our community members understand their health risks, how to access appropriate care, and how their health plans work, they can make better healthcare decisions and take control of their wellness. Alameda Hospital’s Community Health Fair continues this mission.

At the 2017 Health Fair, there were nearly 40 health-related exhibits and activities focusing on common health issues, community resources, and access to care. Subjects included cancer and stroke prevention, nutrition, senior safety, and disaster preparedness. Additionally, the hospital’s departments highlighted their programs and explained their services. Attendees could also learn about 20 local health-related vendors.

Get Free and Low-Cost Health Screenings

Preventive care is a vital part of your health and wellness program. Alameda Health System offers a wide variety of screenings and preventive services during their Annual Community Health Fair. In the past, they have included screenings for:

  • Blood pressure
  • Cholesterol
  • Diabetes
  • Heart health
  • Osteoporosis

These screenings are performed on a first come, first served basis.

One of the most important activities at the health fair is the annual flu vaccination clinic. The flu shot clinic is held in conjunction with the Alameda Fire Department’s Community Emergency Response Teams, and community members can receive free flu shots (while supplies last). The vaccination event serves multiple purposes, since the teams also use the clinic as a disaster preparedness exercise.

A Vibrant and Fun Community Event

In 2017, more than 400 people attended Alameda Hospital’s Community Health Fair. While health and wellness are serious business, the fair is also fun and entertaining. Last year, children received free bicycle helmets and enjoyed face-painting programs. Children also created KidSafe photo identification cards and explored fire trucks and ambulances.
