The History of Highland Hospital
The largest campus within the Alameda Health System, Highland Hospital has 236 inpatient beds and houses a regional trauma center. It also conducts medical and clinical teaching in addition to providing primary, specialty, and multi-specialty care.
Highland Hospital opened in 1927 and has continually expanded to better treat Alameda County residents ever since. Their “Centers of Excellence” include Maternity Services, Gastroenterology, Surgery, Orthopedics, Geriatrics, and Trauma, among others. These centers are staffed with some of the most experienced and recognized providers in the Bay Area and are known for their innovative technology, top-notch teaching programs, and cutting-edge research.
Today, Highland Hospital serves a number of roles within their community. They are Alameda County’s major provider of acute family care, and the facility also serves as the designated trauma center for northern Alameda County. Their emergency department treats more than 80,000 individuals every year and offers the full spectrum of medical care ― from allergy treatment to urology.
Specialty Care at Highland Hospital

- Cardiology: Heart disease is far and away the leading cause of death in the United States, but many heart issues can be treated if they are recognized early. At Highland Hospital, our specialists take a comprehensive approach to heart health that includes evaluation, treatment, and follow-up care for patients with various cardiac conditions, such as coronary artery disease, heart valve problems, and congenital heart disease, among others. Cardiologists’ approach at Highland Hospital includes diagnostic testing, cardiac catheterizations, and coronary stenting as well as pacemaker and defibrillator implantations.
- Emergency and Trauma Services: Highland Hospital’s Emergency and Trauma Centers of Excellence treat nearly 100,000 patients every year. Registered nurses intake and triage emergency room patients, who then receive treatment from a multidisciplinary team of specialists. Trauma patients are treated by an outstanding team of nurses, emergency room doctors, and surgeons, who evaluate, resuscitate, and stabilize patients in critical care. In all, the Emergency and Trauma Center of Excellence at Highland Hospital holds 50 beds with designated spaces for critical care, observation, orthopedics, and sub-acute care. There is also a CT scanner onsite to ensure rapid diagnosis and response.
- Gastroenterology: The Gastroenterology team at Highland Hospital performs thousands of endoscopic procedures every year and offers expert care in all areas of gastrointestinal and liver disease. All of their specialists are board-certified, and they even have a specialized clinic that is dedicated to treating hepatitis C. Additionally, they offer inpatient and outpatient services, and their new GI lab is equipped with cutting-edge equipment and technology.
- Surgery: Surgeons at Highland Hospital’s Surgery Center of Excellence perform more than 5,500 surgeries annually, on average. These procedures range from elective outpatient surgeries to life-saving emergency trauma surgeries and are performed by some of the most reputable and recognized surgeons in the State of California. The most common procedures include orthopedic surgeries, general surgery (such as hernias and laparoscopic gallbladder surgery), and ophthalmology.
