Canopy Health is excited to announce the opening of the Berkeley Outpatient Center, which represents a remarkable partnership between UCSF Health and John Muir Health and is operated by BayHealth. Learn more about this exciting new healthcare option in the East Bay and how it advances our mission of delivering refreshingly clear, human care throughout the Bay Area.

Meeting the Health Needs of the East Bay

Conveniently located near Berkeley, Oakland, and Emeryville, the Berkeley Outpatient Center offers the East Bay community a wide variety of healthcare options. The $90 million center will include a combination of UCSF Health and John Muir Health providers ranging from respected primary care physicians to world-renowned specialists.

Canopy Health members and the greater community can access a wide variety of healthcare options under one roof, including:

  • Family medicine
  • Audiology
  • Cardiology
  • Dermatology
  • Ear, nose, and throat
  • Gastroenterology
  • General surgery
  • Neurology
  • Neurosurgery
  • Obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN)
  • Ophthalmology and optometry
  • Organ transplant follow-up care
  • Orthopedics
  • Pulmonology
  • Rheumatology
  • Urology
  • Vascular surgery

The 96,000 square foot center will also have imaging services, including x-rays and ultrasound, and a lab to conduct blood work and other testing.

At the present time, Berkeley only has one emergency department. Due to this shortage, BayHealth and its partners believe that offering urgent care services at the Berkeley Outpatient Center is vital. While the center will not offer emergency room services, our members can schedule same-day appointments for their minor health issues. Walk-in appointments are also available. The Urgent Care Center will be open from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm from Monday to Friday and 8:00 am to 2:00 pm on Saturdays and Sundays. The center is easily accessible by public transportation and bicycle, and free parking is available on site.

Choosing an urgent care clinic for treatment of upper respiratory infections or minor aches and pains can save you time and money. Typically, there’s less of a wait for non-emergency medical care at an urgent care center, and you’ll typically pay less out-of-pocket when compared to the cost of an ER visit. Nonetheless, about one-third of patients present at the ER with non-emergency medical needs. In 2012, the top three reasons people went to the ER were muscle sprains, upper respiratory infections, and minor cuts — all of which can be safely and successfully treated at an urgent care center.

Two Nationally-Respected Healthcare Organizations Under One Roof

The Berkeley Outpatient Center is the first joint venture between UCSF Health and John Muir Health. According to U.S. News & World Reports, the two organizations operate the top three hospitals in the Bay Area and the top hospital in California (UCSF Medical Center, John Muir Health – Walnut Creek, and John Muir Health – Concord). They are nationally recognized for their exceptional care, commitment to research, and cutting-edge treatment options. This remarkable partnership will give the East Bay access to some of the best physicians in the state and country.

The center is a project of BayHealth, a subsidiary of Canopy Health. BayHealth focuses on infrastructure development that supports the needs of Canopy Health and advances the missions of our organization, UCSF Health, and John Muir Health.

Supporting our Shared Mission to Deliver Patient-Focused, Integrated Healthcare to the Bay Area

As co-founders of Canopy Health, UCSF Health and John Muir Health want to ensure all Canopy Health members have easy access to exceptional and affordable care. The Berkeley Outpatient Center helps fulfill this mission in the East Bay. And unlike many of the other urgent care and outpatient centers in the area, the Berkeley Outpatient Center will offer comprehensive healthcare services under one roof.

Canopy Health members can see their primary care physician (PCP), get lab work and diagnostic studies, and seek referrals with a highly-trained specialist — all in a single location. The center will allow PCPs and specialists to closely coordinate their care and share information about their patients, leading to more transparent care and better health and wellness outcomes. Members can also schedule a same-day appointment at the Urgent Care Center when they need non-emergency care. Since coordinated care is key to the Canopy Health’s system, we believe that bringing PCPs, specialists, imaging, and laboratories together will improve our member’s overall healthcare experience and their attitudes toward their health and wellness in general, as well as that of their families.
