U.S. News & World Report recently announced its 2018-2019 lists of America’s Best Hospitals. We were thrilled to see many of our alliance receive recognition for their services. The publication ranked several alliance members nationally and included five Canopy Health hospitals in its lists of California’s and the Bay Area’s best hospitals.

Keep reading to learn more about these exceptional hospitals.

Understanding the U.S. News & World Reports’ Best Hospital List

Every year, U.S. News & World Report evaluates nearly 5,000 hospitals. Its analysis is mostly objective and considers a series of metrics that include:

  • Survival rates
  • Patient safety
  • Nurse staffing levels
  • Patient volume
  • Reputation with board-certified physicians

The publication pulls data on a set of adult and pediatric specialties and procedures. It aggregates this data, and the hospitals are then ranked nationally and regionally.

Besides its regional and national overall rankings, U.S. News & World Report also rates the hospitals’ performance of specific procedures and specialties. It assigns a ranking to the top 50 hospitals in each specialty. The magazine states, “To be nationally ranked in a specialty, a hospital must excel in caring for the sickest, most medically complex patients.” Hospitals with high specialty and procedure scores that do not reach the Top 50 are considered “high performing.”

Finally, it names a Best Hospitals Honor Roll — 20 hospitals “with unusual competence across a range of adult specialties, procedures and conditions.” Honor Roll hospitals are some of the most respected and medically advanced facilities in the nation.

However, U.S. News & World Reports’ rankings should never be you or your employees’ only factor in a healthcare decision. A wide variety of considerations should impact the choice of where to seek care based on a patient’s unique needs. Rankings are imperfect and don’t reflect factors like geographic location, communication style, and cultural sensitivity.

Before you choose a hospital or specialist, you should consult with your primary care physician and ask for a recommendation. Your doctor will have unique insight into your needs and should be able to direct you to the best specialist or hospital within the Canopy Health alliance based on your health situation.

UCSF Medical Center

UCSF Medical Center was ranked as one of the top hospitals in California and the nation. It was named as the sixth hospital on the Best Hospitals Honor Roll and the top hospital in California. Its adult and pediatric specialties include 25 nationally-ranked programs — including cancer, cardiology, neurology, diabetes, orthopedics, and pulmonology.

John Muir Health Concord

U.S. News & World Report was also impressed by the quality of care at John Muir Health’s hospitals. The Concord campus was ranked the second-best hospital in the Bay Area and the twelfth-best in the state. It was rated as high-performing in six specialty areas and nine procedures, including gastroenterology, orthopedics pulmonology, and urology.

John Muir Health Walnut Creek

John Muir Health’s Walnut Creek campus is the third-highest ranked hospital in the Bay Area on U.S. News & World Report’s 2018-2019 list. It’s also considered the fourteenth-best hospital in California. Walnut Creek’s gynecology program has been nationally ranked for seven years. Many of the hospital’s specialties and programs were designated as high performing — including its geriatric, nephrology, orthopedics, and pulmonology programs. Its cancer programs were also recognized for their colon and lung cancer surgeries.

Sequoia Hospital

Sequoia Hospital is the 24th-best hospital in California (out of more than 400 hospitals statewide) and fourth in the Bay Area. Its high-performing specialties and procedures include aortic valve surgery, heart bypass, heart failure, hip replacement, and colon cancer surgery.

Washington Hospital

Washington Hospital wraps up the Canopy Health alliance, ranked at #62 in California and tenth in the Bay Area. In other words, Washington Hospital performed better than more than 85% of hospitals within the state. Its high-performing procedures include heart failure, hip replacement, and knee replacement.
