For over 60 years, Sequoia Hospital has built a reputation for its use of cutting-edge technology, exceptional patient results, and compassionate care. The hospital is part of Dignity Health — California’s largest non-profit hospital provider. Now, Sequoia Hospital joins Canopy Health’s alliance of over 5,000 physicians and 18 hospitals, expanding our reach into San Mateo County.

Comprehensive Health Services

Sequoia Hospital delivers comprehensive health care to San Mateo County residents and visitors — from labor and delivery to end-of-life care. Its diverse programs include emergency services, advanced diagnostic imaging, cancer and diabetes care, and therapy and rehabilitation, among many others.

In 2014, the hospital opened its new four-story, state-of-the-art pavilion, which nearly doubled Sequoia Hospital’s number of patient beds, added eight operating suites, and improved patient spaces. It also meets California’s seismic requirements.

Award-Winning Cardiac Care

When it comes to cardiac care, experience and responsiveness matter. For example, 25% of heart attack victims will have better recoveries, less permanent damage, and shorter hospital stays if the blocked artery is reopened within 90 minutes. Studies also show that cardiac surgeons and hospitals that frequently perform heart surgeries have higher success rates.

Notably, Sequoia Hospital almost always beats the American Heart Association’s recommended response times for cardiac patients. Its Heart & Vascular Institute performs more atrial fibrillation (a-fib) ablation surgeries than any other West Coast cardiac program. It also has one of the highest survival rates for heart valve replacement surgeries in the United States.

Healthgrades named Sequoia Hospital as one of Best 50 Hospitals for cardiac surgery in 2016, 2017, and 2018. We’re thrilled that our members now have access to Sequoia Hospital’s cardiac program, which also partners with the Cleveland Clinic (the top cardiac center in the U.S., according to U.S. News & World Report).

Cutting-Edge Surgical Options

Sequoia Hospital has consistently embraced the use of surgical technology. It offers 13 dedicated surgical suites, including one hybrid suite that contains both surgical and imaging equipment. Our members now have access to the hospital’s da Vinci Si robot system and minimally invasive surgical options that reduce recovery times. Sequoia Hospital is also one of few Bay Area hospitals that performs advanced Mobi-C cervical disc surgeries (artificial disc replacement). Additionally, the Center for Total Joint Replacement is a Blue Distinction Center, due to its expertise in knee and hip replacements.

Commission-Certified Stroke Care

Sequoia Hospital’s Stroke Program is Joint Commission-certified as an Advanced Primary Stroke Center. In 2017, it received the American Heart Association’s Get with the Guidelines-Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award, recognizing its long-term dedication to consistent, high-quality stroke care.

A Favorite Birth Center for Bay Area Families

Readers of Bay Area Family magazine named Sequoia Hospital’s Birth Center a “Family Favorite” in 2017.  It houses a Level II neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) for premature infants and those who need special medical care. The center offers private rooms, help from International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant nurses, and 24-hour access to anesthesiology and OB services.

More Primary Care Options

In addition to Sequoia Hospital, Canopy Health members can now select a primary care physician (PCP) from Dignity Health Medical Network. This adds 200 more PCPs and specialists to our healthcare alliance and gives our members who live and work in San Mateo County more choice and easier access to care.

Exceptional Patient Experiences

As part of Dignity Health, Sequoia Hospital is committed to the concept of “humankindness.” It recognizes that its patients aren’t a diagnosis; they’re good, hard-working people who deserve holistic and personalized care. When people are treated with empathy, patience, and kindness, their bodies and minds can heal. Sequoia Hospital tries to exhibit humankindness throughout every patient interaction.

This commitment shows. The hospital received Healthgrades’ 2017 Patient Safety Excellence Award and Outstanding Patient Experience Award. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services also gave Sequoia Hospital five-stars for its commitment to Quality in 2017.

Canopy Health and Sequoia Hospital: Partners in Refreshingly Clear, Human Care

Adding Sequoia Hospital gives our members in San Mateo County access to high-quality, local care. More importantly, Sequoia Hospital and Canopy Health have a shared mission: improving our members’ health and wellness through refreshingly clear, human care.
