The Origins and History of John Muir Medical Center, Concord

Located just across the street from the original Concord Hospital, John Muir Medical Center, Concord has an extensive history that spans back nearly 90 years. In 1930, the original Concord Hospital was established in a modest one-story home at 2334 Almond Avenue. That first facility was founded by Edna Haywood, a nurse who would soon expand the home into a two-story hospital facility. In 1956, the actor Tom Hanks was born at Concord Hospital, and in 1972, further expansion led to the creation and construction of Mount Diablo Hospital/Medical Center.

In 1996, voters within the district passed a community benefit agreement in which the rights and title of Mount Diablo Medical Center were transferred to John Muir Health, which also included land, equipment, and buildings. In exchange, John Muir Health made certain assurances as to which healthcare services would be offered at John Muir Medical Center, Concord as well as the amount of funding to be provided within the district. Today, the hospital offers a wide range of medical specialties and wellness classes to better serve their entire community.
