Marin General Hospital (MGH) has a long and rich history. Originally opened in 1952, the hospital has witnessed a five-fold population increase during its time in operation. Today, it serves as the lone provider of many acute care services in the region (including labor and delivery), and the hospital receives 70% of Marin County’s ambulance traffic through its emergency department and Level 3 trauma center. Given this high demand, coupled with an aging and dated facility, MGH determined that a major facelift was necessary.

MGH 2.0

In July of 2016, construction workers broke ground on a new $525 million hospital, appropriately dubbed MGH 2.0. The first phase of construction centers around two new towers, which contain 114 private patient rooms. The initial stage also includes an expanded emergency department that will eventually span 21,500 square feet, as well as six new surgical suites that will exceed current trends and technology. An improved trauma center will include robotic operating rooms and expanded diagnostic imaging capabilities and services. MGH 2.0’s second stage will include a brand new five-story 100,000 square-foot ambulatory services building, as well as an additional parking structure

MGH 2.0 was designed by Perkins Eastman and will open in the summer of 2020. The facility will comply with California’s hospital seismic safety law. It is also being built to achieve LEED designation, and a five-level parking structure including rooftop solar panels is already complete. The hospital will feature floor-to-ceiling windows, rooftop gardens, green spaces, and plenty of natural light in each room. The goal is to create the most comfortable and positive healing space for patients and their families.

The original Marin General Hospital will continue to operate throughout the construction process and will offer its advanced medical expertise, technology, and treatment in an inviting and soothing environment. In addition, patients are encouraged to supplement their medical treatment with integrative therapies at the Center for Integrative Health and Wellness.

Marin General Hospital Donations and Community Fundraising

During a “topping-off” ceremony held in July of last year, board members and local representatives gathered to help install the final beam of the new building. At the event, MGH  announced that Bruce Braden, a member of the Marin General Hospital Foundation, would donate an additional $21 million to the construction efforts. Although this is the largest donation to date, the foundation has raised well over $60 million from community members, physicians, and staff since the plans were initially announced in 2013. To date, the fundraising campaign has received 17 seven-figure donations and two eight-figure commitments.

“Marin General Hospital Foundation is thrilled by the extraordinary support and generosity of our friends and neighbors in Marin County,” said Andrea Shultz, Marin General Hospital Foundation board chairwoman. “With the help of these donors, and through our Building Better Health campaign, we’re determined to see that MGH 2.0 exceeds the needs of our community and that our caregivers continue to deliver the highest quality care in the North Bay.”
