While a joint replacement is a procedure that is performed regularly, many patients (and their at-home caregivers) do not realize how much effort and time, as well as how many resources, go into recovery efforts after a joint replacement surgery.

Canopy Health’s goal is to educate all joint replacement patients and their caregivers on what to expect before, during, and after the surgery. This type of education creates a healthier and more informed Bay Area. Marin General Hospital (a care center that is part of the Canopy Health alliance) offers an interactive and informative session twice a month about what to expect before, during, and after a joint replacement.

What to Expect in a Joint Replacement Class

Taught by Marin General Hospital’s Orthopedic Program Coordinator, the Joint Replacement Class combines the knowledge of physicians, surgeons, nurses, physical therapists, and occupational therapists. With step-by-step descriptions of the joint replacements, the class uses visual aids, anatomical models, and actual joint implants to educate patients and assist them in understanding the process and developing skills for successful rehab.

Topics that are covered in the class include:

  • Anatomy of the joint
  • Anesthesia procedures
  • Surgery
  • What to expect during your hospital stay
  • Pain management after surgery
  • Blood clot and infection prevention
  • Medical devices to aid in recover (such as foot pumps to increase circulation and incentive spirometers to help keep lungs clear during recovery)
  • Prevention of blood infusion
  • Physical therapy exercises
  • Occupational therapy devices
