Filling a Need in Southern Alameda County

Washington Hospital Healthcare System (WHHS) has created a mobile medical unit known as Washington On Wheels (W.O.W.) to provide medical and preventive care services to uninsured, underinsured, and underserved residents of Southern Alameda County, including Fremont, Newark, and Union City.

W.O.W.’s goal is to diagnose medical conditions before they get worse and to treat diagnosed chronic illnesses before they become life-threatening. The mobile clinic is staffed by a nurse practitioner working under the direction of board-certified family physician Dr. Steven Curran. W.O.W. accepts Medicare, Medi-Cal, and some insurance plans. The best part is that W.O.W. provides care regardless of immigration or financial status.

Services Provided

Washington on Wheels provides a wide range of preventive and educational services, including:

  • Physical Exams: Medical professionals will perform routine tests as well as examinations based on personal and family history.
  • Health Screenings: These tests are designed to uncover diseases or other conditions while they are still in the early and most treatable stages. Screenings will look for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and more based on the individual’s unique health profile.
  • Immunizations and Flu Shots: Flu vaccines create antibodies that protect against each year’s most common influenza strains. Washington on Wheels can also immunize for diseases such as mumps, measles, and meningitis.
  • Prescriptions: Common prescriptions include medications for high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus.
  • Education and Counseling: W.O.W. helps inform community residents about their healthcare coverage options as well as providing health education and tips for nutrition and fitness.
  • Occupational Medicine: W.O.W. is available to deliver occupational medical services for employers and their employees.
